What is a panel?

Seamless pattern vs. panel

There are two types of patterns: reportable (a.k.a. seamless) and panel patterns. We have written about reportable patterns here.

Panel patterns, unlike reportable patterns, have a clear beginning and end. Their size is adapted to the size of the final product, so they do not need to have a report. Panel patterns may or may not duplicate each other. They often contain clear outlines of shapes that make it easier to cut the fabric later.

Examples of panel designs

Because each panel has a specific size, where we cut the pattern matters. While in reportable patterns we can forget about the width of the fabric we are printing on - a pattern cut at any point will still look good - with panel patterns we need to take this into account. If you plan to include a number of smaller panels in your design, make sure they fit on the fabric you want to print on. It's also a good idea to keep about 2 cm of space from the edges, as the fabrics are slightly frayed at the edges.

How to prepare a panel design?

You already know that when designing panel designs, it is important to remember to lay them out so that they fit on the fabric. What you should also keep in mind are the cut lines or small gaps (white stripes) between panels, because whether you are adding a reportable or panel design, your pattern will be repeated on the fabric on all sides and with no gaps in between.

On the left, the pattern without cutting lines; on the right, with marked lines to make it easier to cut the panels later.
